Introduction: Toxicity of Worrying About Other Peoples’s Opinion
We all desire to be liked and accepted by seeking the approval of others. It is what makes us human, after all. But, sometimes, being too consumed with worrying about other people’s opinions of yourself can become toxic. We may not always be liked for the right reasons, even if we win social points with people. And worrying about what they think or say about us gives them access and power over our emotions.
Personal Experience
I once struggled with worrying about how others perceived me. I thought, “What are they saying about me?” “Am I unlikeable?” “Did I say or do something wrong or stupid?” Those constant thoughts were almost paralyzing to the point of insanity! Today, we can easily see what people say or think of us through comments or likes on social media.
Does it Make Sense to Allow Others’ Opinions Define You?
But we should ask ourselves, should we base our self-worth on the views of others? Does it make sense to allow the opinions of others to define us? Can imperfect individuals be trusted to pass judgment on others?
When I asked myself these questions, I began to see more clearly what was happening. Gladly, my internal struggle turned into a revelation from God. He showed me how to put that worry into perspective! I realized that worrying about what others think was a form of idol worship, among other things.
The Consequences of Focusing on Others’ Opinions
It speaks volumes when we place a higher value on what other people think of us than what our God in His perfection thinks of us. It tells God that we value the opinions of others over the divine individual God sees within us. It also demonstrates that we are not operating in the spirit but in the flesh. The Bible says in Jeremiah 17:5, “Thus sayeth the Lord; Cursed be man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the Lord.” And how powerful and true that statement is!
Reward for Walking in God’s Will
Focusing on the opinions of others can diminish our self-worth, reduce our peace, and ultimately lead us to a dark place of mental illness. However, we have peace and joy by prioritizing God, honoring him, and focusing on His desires. People can still be unkind and say negative things about you, even if you try to be likable to everyone. Moreover, some of these faults can stem from their jealousy and hatred.
The Divine Roadmap for Righteous Behaviour
Our Father in Heaven, with His infinite wisdom, provided us with a roadmap called the Bible to teach us how to behave as faithful followers of Christ. This roadmap convicts us to walk in righteousness and truth. The reward we obtain from God when we follow His will is His favor in our lives, both on earth and beyond.
Confidence Through a Close Relationship with God
When we align ourselves with the will of God, we have a natural confidence in ourselves through the holy spirit! The Bible says in Proverbs 28:1, “The wicked flee when no man pursueth, but the righteous are as bold as a lion.” The righteous are bold because we know we operate from spiritual righteousness that pleases God, our creator, whom we should ultimately focus on. And we see his favor in our lives when we petition Him in prayer, and he answers the call. This close relationship with God removes us from walking in the flesh and hearing the noise of other carnal-minded individuals who are empty vessels the enemy uses to tear us down.
Conclusion: Hearing the Voice of the Lord
Only through the joy of living with the word of God and having a relationship with him do we filter out that noise and hear the voice of the Lord telling us who we are. When we hear the sound of that voice, we marvel with peace, joy, confidence, and boldness.
I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well
